I started Commando Fit in May, after being back and forth to the doctors for many months being very ill and severely over weight. I had an emergency call of the doctors to get there ASAP. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My blood sugars were 114 which is extremely high. I was close to be put on insulin there and then but asked the doctor to give me a chance. I knew I had to change my lifestyle and quickly.
After being weighed and given a health check I was 19 stone 10 lbs and had high cholesterol. This was somewhat of a shock being only 38 with a young family. I was put on Metformin tablets and Statin to reduce Cholesterol there and then. I came home and cried. I quickly realised I had to change my lifestyle and I joined Commando Fit the Saturday after. Carl is my neighbour, so I was aware of Commando Fit. I’m not going to lie, it was hard, but the support was amazing. I cried, laughed, cried, wanted to quit many times but with the patience of Carl and a fab team I battled on. On my next GP appointment, I’d lost 2 stone and my blood sugars were down to 68. I continued with my healthy eating and training with Carls help. Every week it got a bit easier and every week I went back for more due to the team support that I had. 3 months later another 2 stone off and my sugars are now down to 48. My GP was amazed. I`m now a year into the membership of the group. My sugars are now under the normal average person range (around 43) and my tablets are being reduced. I’m nearly 5 stone lighter, gone from a size 22/24 to a comfortable 16/18 and I’m cholesterol free. Most importantly my diabetes is in reverse!!! If I can do it I honestly believe anyone can! Obviously, Carl and Commando Fit has been the key in my journey. I don`t feel alone on my journey.

I started my journey with commando fit a year ago. Carl has been the best, always encouraging everyone, there has never been a session the same and I’ve been going for a year...Carl knows all our limits and pushes me especially when I’m being lazy, which I need. The friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime, everyone encourages and spurs one another on and the team spirit amongst my fellow commandos is exceptional. Carl encourages this and new members are always welcomed with open arms.
Family friendly too, both my daughters have attended sessions and thoroughly enjoyed. Plus whilst struggling for childcare when my partner was out of the country Carl encouraged me to bring the children along including the baby.
I am fitter mentally and physically through training and noticed a difference in my shape and strength I look forward to my training sessions and miss it when I’m unable to go.
Great trainer and great way to get fit I’d highly recommended to anyone considering joining.

I started training with Carl in a bid to lose some weight and tone up but was really concerned about my previous injuries my knees, my medical issues thyroid and menopause. I have lost a lot of confidence over the years and put on 3 stone.
I started off slowly and to be honest really struggled with my knees the pain was excruciating and some days I had to rest up 2/3 days at the a time but I didn't give up and i couldn't.
My overall strength and fitness improved so much in a short space of time that I was able to perform exercises I would never have attempted in years with Carl's help. I was jogging again, squatting but i knew i had to stay away from the lunges and step ups on the box because of my knees it was not worth the pain. I am even attempting jumping squats so I know that my joints and muscles are getting stronger and I am not getting much pain as I used too. I also benefited with some weight loss a stone exactly which give me the motivation to keep attending Commando Fit classes.
I like the mixture between strength and aerobic and have found training outside is really refreshing and the encouragement from the other participants outstanding and I feel at home.
Carl is energetic, fun, committed and inspirational... I can’t recommend him enough!

I'm 40 and have been attending Commando Fit since May 18
I`m ex-forces myself. I left the Army in 2012 due to mental health. I recently had post-natal depression after having my first son and found it so hard to juggle being a soldier of 7 years and a mum. Family came first. I signed off and moved back to Wales with my husband and son
Upon reflection I miss military life significantly and had a void I couldn't fill. I've always kept myself fit and healthy since leaving and I`ve been to various clubs and Gyms. I`ve soon got bored with them as it was same old week in week out. I then heard about Commando Fit. I thought that's right up my street. I didn't have high expectations. I thought I`ll give it a go. I loved it from the first day and I haven`t looked back since
All abilities of fitness are catered for as Carl has alternative exercises if you find it hard. Carl (Sarge) keeps it exciting. We never know what we are going to do until we get there. Every session is different. In a year I have NEVER done the same circuit or session twice. The equipment is always set out when you get there and is very well organised. The camaraderie between what we call `Warriors` is second to none. We are like a family. Carl has created this with his enthusiasm, encouragement, leadership and his unique sense of humour. In a year I've lost a stone in weight. I am so much fitter and stronger physically and mentally. The void I was missing for 15/16 years has been replaced with Commando Fit. We all have our dark days and since attending commando fit these days seem to be behind me. We all help each other. We are a team
Commando Fit is now a way of life for me. It`s become my second family
Thank you so much to Carl for all the hard work and support. And long may it continue

I started Commando Fit in February 2018 and have found it to be a very positive experience both mentally and physically. My original aim was to get more physically fit before I was forty this year. Over the course of the year I feel my mental strength has also improved which helped me to cope with an unpleasant situation in work last year.
I am a quiet and reserved person by nature, worry too much and can get rather anxious at times. Taking regular exercise outdoors in the fresh air has helped to reduce stress and alleviate the number of debilitating and painful migraines that I also suffer with.
The importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising cannot be under estimated. My father is a Type 2 insulin dependent diabetic and even though he has looked after himself since his diagnosis 20 years ago, he has experienced some of the health complications associated with diabetes. (He has recently had two stents fitted in his heart). Many people do not realise that diabetes is a serious condition and the consequences of not looking after yourself can be devastating and life changing.
Lastly, but by no means least, I would like to congratulate and thank Sgt Carl Gilson for establishing this fitness class. His training and many years of experience in the Royal Marines has enabled him to motivate and challenge people both physically and mentally regardless of ability. He has a unique brand of humour and a ‘way with words’ which makes training enjoyable and fun. Sgt Gilson is dedicated, professional and a committed instructor, much thought and effort is put into the classes so that people can achieve their goals and improve their general wellbeing.
We pride ourselves on creating an environment where any and all individuals can feel comfortable and confident in their training. We welcome people from all back grounds, looking to slowly but surely get you back to your full potential.
